Jackie's apartment building was one of many in that section of the suburbs of Santa Barbara, California. There was a road going by in front, beyond that was a few cabins and a bit of a distance beyond that, the ocean could be seen. It was about 10am, the surfer dudes were already in full swing, catching waves and flirting with the local bikini clad women sunning themselves on the beach.
Jackie hadn't packed much, she probably wouldn't be gone long. She left a note for Shawn about how to take care of the cat, said goodbye to Remington, and pulled her little suitcase on its wheels out the door to lock up the apartment.
Now all she had to do was wait for her new friend to show up.

My apologies for being late, young lady, there were many distractions and one attempt to rob me of my coins.

Date: 2010-02-19 06:29 am (UTC)[bit confused at that last part] Someone mugged you? What already? [pfft] Only in Cali...

Date: 2010-02-20 07:56 pm (UTC)Attempted, nothing more. I soon saw to him. [He lifts his cane, in indication that whoever it was had a worse day than they imagined they'd have]
At any rate, I do trust my late arrival was not an inconvenience to you.

Date: 2010-02-20 07:59 pm (UTC)Oh no, not at all. We're not driving there anyway, I figured we could take a cab. [drags her suitcase to the curb, collapsing the handle into it]

Date: 2010-02-23 05:29 am (UTC)I am always practical, young lady.
And thought the method of propulsion has obviously changed, it is somewhat comforting to note that the name 'cab' has endured.

Date: 2010-02-23 05:44 am (UTC)[looking up the street at the light traffic passing by, she puts two fingers in her mouth and lets a shrill whistle fly] TAXI!
[a yellow taxicab stops in front of them, the driver getting out to help them with their luggage, putting it into the trunk]

Date: 2010-02-23 05:53 am (UTC)Fascinating concept. An internal combustion engine. I suspect it runs on petroleum, given the composition of the fumes.

Date: 2010-02-23 06:04 am (UTC)Where to? [the driver asks, tilting his head back towards them]
Airport, please. Thanks.
[and off they go! it's a nice scenic route to the airport along the coastline]
[Jackie's trying to watch Sherlock without looking like she's watching him....cause he's never been in a car before and she's curious as to how he'll react to the ride]

Date: 2010-02-23 06:18 am (UTC)[finally, they pull up with a myriad of other cabs in front of the receiving area of the airport]
[Jackie gets out and pays the driver before retrieving her suitcase and waiting for Sherlock....before leading the way into the airport through the milling people] Stick close, I'd hate to have you get lost here.

Date: 2010-02-23 06:36 am (UTC)Astounding, my dear! Quite astounding! [The last word is drawn out as he turns his attention back to her, picking up his bag]
[And he stays close, even though he's quite used to the bustle of train stations and docks. She has been kind and enthusiastic, so he won't make a fuss. Nor does he allow the people staring curiously at his dress to distract him]
A remarkable efficient operation given the vast numbers of people that must come through here daily.

Date: 2010-02-23 06:42 am (UTC)[first obstacle: the security check...Jackie gets them in line] They check our bags for anything dangerous. Y'know knives, bombs, guns... [trails off at the word guns] ....you didn't bring anything like that, did you? [eyeing his little bag]

Date: 2010-02-23 07:04 am (UTC)Assuredly not, my friend - I only carry a magnifying glass, spare gloves, and some measuring instruments. None of which can be construed in any way as a weapon. I even neglected to bring my compass, owing to the sharp metal points.

Date: 2010-02-23 07:06 am (UTC)...though I should tell you in advance, they expect us to remove our shoes.

Date: 2010-02-23 07:13 am (UTC)A wise precaution. I do hope they check the soles for false bottoms. I would hate to think they only check the insides.

Date: 2010-02-23 07:20 am (UTC)[soon it's their turn...Jackie takes off her shoes and piles her purse and shoes into a small bin that goes on the conveyer belt, her suitcase following behind]
[she steps through the metal detector...and sets it off, having to stand still as they figure out it was her keys in her pocket that did it...after that, she's cleared to go]
[she looks back to make sure Sherlock is getting through alright while she's trying to get her shoes back on]

Date: 2010-02-23 08:02 am (UTC)[And yes, it is quite the surreal sight to see Sherlock Holmes in an airport security line.]
*facepalms* Completely forgot about passports...want to pretend they don't need them?
Date: 2010-02-23 08:26 am (UTC)[pulls out the handle on her suitcase so she can drag it behind] Good, the hard part is over.
[walking, steps onto one of those little moving sidewalks as they are making their way towards the food courts where they can get directions to their gate]
What passports? :-P
Date: 2010-02-23 07:12 pm (UTC)And to think in my day this was only used to move factory lines. A great boon to the meat processing industry, and I can see that in some ironic ways this tradition has continued.
exactly!
Date: 2010-02-24 05:47 am (UTC)[soon they're at the food court] Don't know if you're hungry, but I should warn you. Everything here is terribly overpriced.
[pulls out their tickets to see what gate they need to be at]
Re: exactly!
Date: 2010-02-26 03:48 am (UTC)You do not see it? The entire complex is set up to move a person through necessity and to profit generation as swiftly as possible. By the time you are through security, you are meant to be in a poor mood - and when a human body is in such a state, they are more likely to seek solace in food or drink.
[He looks at the ticket, then around them, then points to the right with his cane]
This way, I take it?
Re: exactly!
Date: 2010-02-26 06:38 am (UTC)[checking different signs for gates] Y-es...I think so. We need gate A5. [walking in the direction indicated]
[outside huge windows you can see airplanes taking off, landing, and parked in the gates]

Date: 2010-02-28 05:26 am (UTC)It is not the craft itself - fascinating though that is. It is the scale that astonishes me. The trials and tribulations of successfully launching one craft that complex is astounding...but look at them. Hundreds must arrive and depart every day, I am sure.
What a thing, this is.

Date: 2010-02-28 08:32 am (UTC)[over the PA system, their gate is now boarding]
[tugs at his sleeve] Com'n, don't want to be late.

Date: 2010-03-03 07:12 am (UTC)It was theorized that this could be possible, although the commonality of it was never imagined in even the most far-flung of fictional works. People tend to forget that all marvels become commonplace, sooner or later.

Date: 2010-03-03 07:15 am (UTC)[gets in line with the other passengers, hands Sherlock his own ticket as the line moves along]
[hands her ticket to the lady tearing them, going through to the little tunnel that leads to the airplane door itself]

Date: 2010-03-04 05:38 pm (UTC)Ah, you can tell that the process of air travel was pioneered by Americans - if it were a British invention I rather suspect there would be someone to take our bags as we boarded.
no subject
Date: 2010-03-05 07:18 pm (UTC)[walking up the tunnel, the sounds of the airplane's motor getting louder as they get closer]
[the stewardess greets them as they enter the airplane itself but brightens noticeably when seeing Jackie. the two girls hug and exchange pleasantries, obviously old friends]

Date: 2010-03-07 05:37 pm (UTC)took me awhile, sorry about that
Date: 2010-03-19 06:21 pm (UTC)Com'n, our seats are this way. [Jackie works her way down the narrow aisle, looking for the numbers on their tickets]
No worries :)
Date: 2010-03-22 04:06 am (UTC)[Once they reach the proper seats, he looks up as she stores the bags, putting his own next to hers. Then he sits down, hands resting on top of his cane]
Relatively efficient storage of passengers, though you will notice it is slightly less space than is comfortable for an individual.
